Reclaiming VAT on purchases made before VAT registration

Hi, as stated on the HMRC website, I'd like to claim back VAT made on purchases of stock before my VAT registration (https://www.gov.uk/vat-registration/purchases-made-before-registration). I've put these in my accounts by manually adding up the VAT from before VAT registration and then creating a journal entry from my stock/asset account to the VAT control account. However this journal entry then doesn't show up in box four on my Clearbooks VAT return, how can I add the VAT on purchases before my VAT registration to box 4? Thanks, Anthony

Hi Anthony,

Please can you confirm whether you have ticked the purchase box include in VAT return?

Additionally, please could you provide me the details of this transaction so I can test this for you.

Hi both - just to say that I had to do this recently and you have to date the journal the first day of VAT registration.

In my case I debited VAT control with the VAT, purchases/asset accounts with the net (ticking the VAT-Purchases on both lines) then crediting stock/asset account with the gross.
