I entered the wrong share numbers for the brought forward share figures for the two shareholders but there does not appear to be a way to edit that detail for shareholders.

You are right, in fact there's currently no way to edit any of the share transactions (hopefully this will appear in the future).
The best way to correct this therefore is to create a "buy back" transaction for the share, on the b/fwd date, to cancel the original entry, then create a share issue, on the date, for the correct number of shares.
