Can't add additional contact to existing customer

I need to add an additional contact to an existing customer. I've tried doing it using the Edit Customer button on the Create Quote screen but that doesn't work. Then I've tried by going to the customer record and choosing Edit. I enter the details of the additional contact, click Save and get a message to say that the customer was updated successfully but the additional contact record isn't there.

When adding the contact were you including a separate email address too?

Yes, new contact name & email address.
