Cis Registration

Problem reported by Richard Harrison 8 years ago

I am trying to register our company for CIS returns using clear books. The guides say that we should authorise clear books on HMRC online. I have spoken to HMRC (via Webchat) and they have advised me that you cannot do this online but have to submit a manual form. Can anyone advise

Hi Richard,

If you want to automatically verify subcontractors via Clear Books you have to appoint us as the agent for CIS in the Government Gateway (steps 2&3 below):

https://www.clearbooks.co.uk/support/guides/vat-2/new-navigation-submit-vat-ec-sales-returns-online-hmrc/

This will allow you to verify subcontractors automatically as below:

https://www.clearbooks.co.uk/support/guides/cis/verifying-cis-subcontractors/

Otherwise, you verify your subcontractors manually:

https://www.clearbooks.co.uk/support/guides/reporting/verify-cis-subcontractors-manually/

When subcontractors are verified (either automatically or manually) you can submit CIS returns as explained in the guide below:

Thanks John. Unfortunately I think as HMRC have "developed" their system you can no longer use the system you outline above. There is no on line option to appoint an agent anymore on line. I would have to do this by manually getting an authorisation code sent to yourselves which is clearly;y not going to work. Has anyone else managed to add clear books as an agent on line recently

Hi Richard,

Can you please make sure that you are logging into the gateway via the link below? Unfortunately HMRC are running several similar online systems simultaneously and the link below is the only one which allows you to appoint us as agent for CIS (following the steps in the guide my colleague John posted in his reply above).

I talked someone through this only a couple of days ago, so I'm relatively sure the option should still be there.

Please let me know if you encounter any further difficulties.

All the best.

No problem Richard. Thank you for confirming it worked.
