validation of email address when saving a contact

I used to be able to put some general text such as 'by post' in an email address, or "copy to second party", as a reminder when trying to send out emails, but now when I save the contact it insists on validating the email address even though I haven't got one, why is it doing this?

Hi Samantha. I am sure you will appreciate that we would like to keep the email field for its intended use. You can leave notes on customer accounts, which may be useful for the purposes you describe, although these notes won't prompt you when you click on the send email icon.
