Vat Return Submission as an Agent

Problem reported by 6 years ago

I keep getting vat return submission error, when submitting a vat return via Clearbooks. I have set the toggle accountant as agent and checked all of the clients details correct. Does anybody know how to submit a vat return as an agent? I have been using our agent HMRC log in details too.

Hi,

Will you please tell me what the error says (copy and paste)?

I couldn't copy and paste the message, but it says 'the vat return could not be submitted to HMRC' have you enabled clearbooks as your agent? is your vat number correct? I have checked all of these and they are correct, I have enabled clearbooks as your agent.

Clearbooks make it difficult to submit vat returns, I have never encountered problems with other software providers, when submitting as an agent.

This is something that we will have to look into. Please email contact support with your company name and any other details you may have and we can investigate.

I have already done that and he is looking into it, I just thought somebody on here may know what the problem is, as I am assuming a lot of other people have encountered problems with submitting vat returns. I can't even submit using the clients log in details, as for some reason you need to have Clearbooks as your agent, even though Clearbooks aren't the agent of the client!

If you as the accountant weren't submitting on the client's behalf, Clear Books would need to be set as the agent because Clear Books would be submitting on the business's behalf.

It still doesn't make sense, as it would be the client making the vat submission, the software is just a way to send the vat return to the HMRC. No other software provider for Vat or any other tax, requires themselves to be the agent. I think it is something that needs to be changed really, as it just isn't right.

Hi - You are not alone, CB's methodology is unique and daft.

Even more daft is that I and my clients can use our .GOV credentials to submit their VAT returns, ie my clients turn on "Set accountant as agent" and then use their credentials to submit their own returns.
