HMRC says I missed a VAT filing

Problem reported by Adrian Bhagat 6 years ago

I just got a letter from HMRC saying that I 'missed a VAT filing regulations deadline on 7 October'. However, Clearbooks is showing receipts for VAT reports submitted electronically for Nov 2018, Feb 2019, May 2019, Aug 2019 and the VAT payments have been taken from my account. My HMRC online VAT account only shows one VAT return submitted in the past, and that was for August 2018 (I think that was the last one that I submitted manually online)

There are no contact details on the letter. Is there some other task I need to complete?

Many thanks for your help.

Hi Adrian,

I'm sorry to hear you are having this issue. I would advise contacting HMRC and providing them with the receipts you can see within Clear Books. It sounds like a mix up.

All the best,

Mohamed.

Thank you for the reply, Mohamed. I couldn't get through to them on the phone but I sent an email via their online form. I expect I will be waiting a long time for a reply!

However, in the meantime, in my business tax account I noticed that it was asking me to register for Making Tax Digital. When it clicked the link, it said I had to log in as an agent/accountant to do this. I managed to find another link that let me register myself and it seems the registration process has started.

I hope that will sort the problem. It appears that you have to specifically register for MTD but if you haven't registered, the system still accepts and processes digitally submitted VAT reports (until one day, you get a letter...)

Hi Adrian,

I'm sorry to hear you didn't manage to get through. I hope you do get a response back and that everything works ok. Please let me know if you need anything further.

All the best,

Mohamed.

I got a reply from HMRC saying the letter was sent in error, so that's a relief. Thanks for your time, Mohamed.

Hi Adrian,

It's my pleasure. Glad that it was nothing more than an error in the end. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

All the best,

Mohamed.
