Website Hosting Costs - category?

Question asked by Ryan Davis 7 years ago

Hi I am just wondering what administrative expenses category people use for bills relating to websites such as hosting, maintenance, purchasing domain names etc? Thanks in advance!

Hi Ryan - I'd tend to create an account for Website hosting & maintenance and put it under General Admin or advertising, depending on what the main purpose of the site is. If you have a website that generates income, ie does something, then building it in the first place will tend to be treated as a Fixed (non-current) Asset and depreciated, as you would equipment.

Hi Paul, thanks for your advice. The website is purely for information about what we offer. I've put a website services category under advertising and hope that will suffice! Thanks again

Hi, sorry to go back to this. I've set up a website services under advertising but on the account codes page it shows No VAT under the default VAT rate.....is this correct? It's just the other advertising, general admin, travel etc are blank under this column.

Hi Ryan - remember CB doesn't know what the default VAT rate will be, it depends on your business and who you buy the goods or services from as to whether there's VAT or not and so it's best to set a default VAT per supplier and that overrides the account code settings.

Anyway, if you don't want warning messages, change the default VAT rate in the account code to be what you think will be the normal one.
