Tax Return

Question asked by Mrs Helen Savage 6 days ago

Hi there Can I use ClearBooks to submit my 4 quarterly MTD reports, but then still use my accountant to submit my tax return?

Hi Helen,

You can certainly continue to submit your four quarterly updates yourself while your accountant handles the final year-end return.

To make this work, you will need to complete two main steps to link your accountant to your data and to HMRC.

  1. Invite your accountant to Clear Books:

First, you must give your accountant access to your records. You can do this by clicking the Building Icon at the top right > Click Manage users > Click the Invite user button and input your accountant's email address. Once they accept, they will be able log into view your business.

  1. Appoint your accountant as your HMRC agent:

Your accountant will also need to be formally appointed as your agent with HMRC to submit your final tax return. They will typically send you an authorisation request through the HMRC portal. Even after they are appointed as your agent, you still retain the ability to submit your own quarterly updates through Clear Books. HMRC accepts submissions from both the taxpayer and the authorised agent, allowing you to stay in control of your quarterly reporting.

How to open your MTD Tax Return account:

For the year end submission, you must add a MTD Tax return account by hovering over your business name at the top right > Add MTD Tax Return. This acts as a central hub that pulls in the profit figures from your business and allows you or your accountant to add other personal tax information.

Your accountant can log into this specific account after 5 April to review your totals, add any personal allowances or reliefs, and submit the final declaration to HMRC for you.
