VAT on opening debtors not appearing on VAT return for cash basis

Problem reported by Michael Beaver 9 years ago

Set up a new client with their VAT scheme being the standard scheme and cash basis for VAT. In the opening balances I entered all of the debtors including the VAT treatment. When I run the VAT return for the first quarter, the VAT on paid invoices is not showing up where the invoices were part of the opening balance.

Have I done something wrong or does the system not pick these up?

Hi Michael! ;-)

Just tried it in the demo and all seemed to work. Stupid question but the bill in question was actually paid during said VAT quarter I presume?

Only other glitch i've ever had surrounding VAT is when the scheme as added/amended after the bill/invoice has been created.

Hi Kevin!

Very strange ... The scheme hasn't been touched since before I started adding data so I know I haven't done that.

And yes, those invoices and bills were paid during the quarter. They actually did their first quarter VAT in Sage so I'm cross referencing, otherwise I would have had no idea.

Having said that, the invoice dates are before the Clear Books VAT scheme start date of 1 Jan 15, so could they being inadvertently excluded as their 'invoice' date for take on purposes was prior to 1st January.

When you tried it in the Demo, were you putting in take on balances that were before the VAT scheme start date?

Bingo.

It's the VAT scheme date that's throwing it out. That's actually a bug as it shouldn't let you enter any bill/invoice without a VAT scheme of some sort being in place (only lets you do it via the wizard which i've never actually used before).

You'll need to amend the scheme dates.

Now to unmatch and re-process all the payments and receipts :(

Unless there's been a change in VAT scheme along the way or FRS is involved I don't think you'll need to. Just amend the scheme dates and you should be good to go.
