Vat Control using last year figures in this year

Hi I have moved over my last year accounts to clear books, Im still having trouble with vat control. I am still seeing a balance from last year which I need cleared. Ive have assigned the vat dates from 1st April to 30th June and a vat return comes up as 0 but I have a balance on my dashboard that needs to show the correct amount.
