Establishing online submissions to HMRC of your VAT / EC Sales returns

Question asked by Mike Ellis 7 years ago

I am trying to set up to be able to submit vat reurns directly from CB instead of manually. I have read the above guide and come unstuck on step 3. I appreciate that the interface in the HMRC portal may have changed since the guide was written but there is not an appoint agent link anywhere to be seen. A quick webchat with online support suggested that it is not possible and that CB have to actively request access to my .gov account.

I'd be grateful of some advice.

Good Morning Mike,

I believe HMRC may be in the process of updating their systems so may have altered the locations of some of their features. Please follow the two links below, as to my understanding the functionality is within one these government access gateways.

This first link is the original link that usually (used to) contained the feature to assign an agent. http://www.gateway.gov.uk/

The second is the alternative if the first is unsuccessful. https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/gg/sign-in?continue=/account

As far as us needing to actively request access, this is untrue. As the same process would be required if you would like an accountant to submit returns on your behalf.

Thanks, Theo

You only have to enter your agents registration number that you are registered with HMRC in the box to submit, I have been doing this for months with no problem but you must be a registered agent to do it. Otherwise use your clients registration login either works.

For clarity I am not the agent. I am the business owner and am trying to set-up CB as the agent in order to submit from within CB.

Theo...

The first link was unfamiliar to me but the second link just takes you to the normal account overview screens. There is nothing in here that I can see where I can appoint an agent or enter the CB agent ID.

Quick update on this for anyone else.

The link can be found in http://www.gateway.gov.uk/ but cannot to the best of my knowledge be found in the normal tax portal. From my usage of it your username and password will be the same for both sites.

Solved.
