VAT and digital transfer

Question asked by Alison Hurley 6 years ago

we have just begun to do VAT returns. We were late informing HMRC, so we have a month where we did not add VAT to our invoices. We know we still have to pay this, but how do I do the return. I've signed up to the digital transfer but it obviously excludes those invoices from the return. Is it possible to add them manually somewhere?

In that case, you should leave the invoices as they are and do one of two things:

Either create new invoices to account for the extra VAT. Set the Gross amount for the full total of VAT and the VAT as 'Manual'. Send it to the client.

Or Create new, duplicate invoices (click on 'Copy' in the original invoices), use the Credit function at the bottom of each invoice to credit the amount that the customer has already paid off and send the invoice to the customer so that they can pay off the remaining amount.

Hi Alison,

You should first make sure that the necessary VAT has been added to each invoice. If you need to add it, go to Sales> Invoives> [invoice number]> Edit, select the correct VAT and VAT treatment and Update.

When you run the VAT return, make sure to tick the 'Include late invoices' box so that they are included.

Thank you, OK then how do I then deal with the underpayment from clients - it'll look like they've underpaid as their invoices will be a higher amount.
