Two businesses registered by mistake

Question asked by Stephanie Norris 4 months ago

Hi,

I have set up clearbooks for sole trader. On my HMRC account it shows 2 sole trader accounts registered for MTD as I used a slightly different name when setting up the clearbooks account. Should I just change the clearbooks account details to match the HMRC account name exactly? Will this then sync with my existing sole trader account active for 40 odd years OR should i cease that business account on my HMRC page and stick with the name I set up with in clear books. For clarity i have only ever had one sole trader account - HMRC assumes 2 now because of the slight difference in name. TIA Stephanie

Hi Stephanie,

Updating the name in Clear Books will not merge two records on the HMRC side. In this case, you will need to select the correct income source in the MTD setup page. You will then have to cease the erroneous income source record in your online HMRC account to get rid of it.

Hi Again,

Thank you for this previous reply.

My issue is this: I have set up an account with Cllearbooks which is named slightly differently to the business name I use as sole trader with HMRC. This was not intentional - just a mistake on my part. The Clearbooks named account is showing on my HMRC page. Also showing on my HMRC page is my usual business name. As such HMRC is expecting quarterly submissions from two business accounts when I only have one as a sole trader.

Should I enter income details into the Clearbooks named account? OR set up a new Clearbooks account in the usual business name and delete the erroneously named account? How would `I delete the account in Clearbooks ? Would this delete the erroneous business name in my HMRC page? I have not entered any data yet.

Thanks in advance

Stephanie Norris
