MTD Tax Return: Savings / Dividends / HMRC tax estimate totals remain at 0 despite entering information

Question asked by Simon Humphrey 3 days ago

Hi,

I have not yet submitted a quarterly property return for MTD, but have started filling in savings interest and dividend amounts for the 2026-27 tax year in preparation for submitting the end of year tax return through ClearBooks.

The property income section on the MTD Tax Return page shows as empty too, despite the page showing property showing profit and loss etc. - is this because I have not yet submitted a quarterly property income/expenses report?

I also don't have a "Refresh Calculation" button which I see the MTD finalisation page should have.

Have I missed a step / is this still in development?

To confirm, if I click on 'savings' in the 'other income' section, I have entries in there I have saved, but the totals are not showing on the dashboard, and the HRMC tax estimate remains at 0...

Hi Simon,

The 2026-27 tax year doesn't end until the 5th of April 2027, so it is too early to fill it in. You also do not get the option to refresh or finalise calculations until the tax year has ended.

Property income showing 0 is indeed because you haven't submitted any quarterly updates yet. The data in the MTD tax return account comes from HMRC, not Clear Books, so if HMRC don't have the data yet it won't show up.

Hi Simon,

We don't keep any copies of the data in the MTD tax return account. It's a direct window into HMRC's data, and any changes you make there are made directly with HMRC. There's no Sync process between us and HMRC, but HMRC's internal systems often take a while to sync up once new data has been submitted.

And yes, we are planning to add a note about the data being sent from HMRC to make that clearer. It is likely HMRC weren't expecting data this early so you might have to wait until the end of the year before they take things like interest into account.

Hi Tommy,

Thanks for the reply. OK that makes more sense... however...

I understand that the tax year has not yet ended, but I do have e.g. savings accounts that I have closed and know the interest amounts for those accounts that I would like to fill in ahead of time. I would also expect that once I have entered the figures into clearbooks (it looks like clearbooks keeps a copy of pending amounts to sync back to HMRC, right?) the totals are the sums of the values I have entered into clearbooks, regardless of whether it's been submitted yet?

If the data displayed on the MTD Tax Return is being pulled from HMRC, maybe it's worth adding a message/tooltip to the dashboard to say that the figures won't update until you have submitted to HMRC?
