Is there a way of setting a reminder on the system to remind users when a clients 1st year frs discount expires?

You could add this as a Client-specific event on the Partners module - Click on the Partners module link at the top of the page and head to Clients > Client overview. Click on the name of the client and hit the Manage Events button.
