'Payment method' - what does it actually do?

What does selecting a specific 'payment method' actually do in reality?

I'm losing count of the amount of clients who select 'credit card' thinking that alone's enough to post the payment to the credit card account.

Hi Kevin,

In reality it doesn't make too much difference. It's really there as a reference for yourself and to make sure the money is assigned to the correct places.
